What is in a name..?

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” – William Shakespeare

As you may or may not have noticed, this blog is titled “Know Thyself.” Although I find it quite self-explanatory, I would like to include a short bit about the phrase’s origin and my own personal interpretation. Delphi The phrase’s oral origin is debatable but its first appearance in writing was as an inscription above the Temple of Apollo at Delphi– the ancient residence of the all-knowing Oracle of Delphi. The ruins of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi are an UNESCO World Heritage site.

There were said to be three inscriptions over the entrance to the temple: “Know thyself”, “Nothing in excess” and “A pledge, then calamity.” There was also reportedly carved a large “E”. These inscriptions are generally accredited to the seven sages. They no longer (if they ever once did) exist but that has not stopped them from achieving fame nor their repeated use in ancient, not so ancient, and modern literature. know thyself Over the generations from ancient times up to present the inscription “Know Thyself” has been interpreted in a variety of ways. As time progresses in my own life I too have molded and changed my interpretation of said phrase.

Understanding oneself is an important part of internal as well as external growth. By understanding our strengths and weaknesses we are more readily adept at handling a variety of life situations. Self-discovery is one of our most powerful tools in our personal arsenal. What does “Know Thyself” mean to you?
